American Beach Weekend Celebrates History, Culture and Community

The 2nd Annual American Beach Weekend brought together residents and visitors for a weekend celebrating the rich history, culture and enduring legacy of one of Florida’s most significant African American communities.

The multi-day event featured sunrise beach walks, Beach Day festivities, tours of the A.L. Lewis Museum, a traditional fish fry, jazz, comedy, golf, coastal cuisine and the Legacy in Color African art exhibition. Guests also enjoyed a presentation by local authors, a quilt display and a Sunday program featuring worship services, an economic development workshop and a book discussion with Harvard Divinity School Dean Dr. Marla Frederick, moderated by Johnetta Betsch Cole.

Organizers said the annual gathering continues to honor the vision of American Beach founder Abraham Lincoln Lewis while celebrating the community’s past and helping shape its future.
