The River City Pearls Interest Group of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. recently celebrated ‘Pink Goes Red,’ for heart health with a virtual exercise program.  The program included Zumba with YMCA Instructor Tara Mitchell who had heart’s pumping red and flowing with support.

Adding a personal touch, heart attack survivor Lanedra Lowe recounted her personal experience as she suffered a heart attack in 2017. She stressed the importance of listening to our bodies to ensure that women take heed to signals and signs that may indicate a heart attack is on the horizon.

According to the American Heart Association, “a heart attack is not always as obvious as pain in your chest, shortness of breath and cold sweats- in fact, a heart attack can actually happen without a person knowing it.” In addition, Alpha Kappa Alpha member Tamekia Parence, a nutritionist, offered healthful information that the entire community can use to increase awareness of heart disease. In an effort to promote healthy eating, Parence shared several tips on food preparation including portion control, heart healthy foods and heart healthy recipes.

According to the survey taken after the presentation, all participants learned more info on heart health and benefited from the virtual Zumba workout. Shown is the interest group exercising via zoom.
