By Wyllisa R. Bennett | Jacksonville rapper Sk8tie, 32, is trading his hometown for Atlanta, hoping to take his music career to the next level in one of hip-hop’s most influential cities.
The move follows the release of his latest single, “Cost Me a Lot,” released June 1 on his birthday. The deeply personal track reflects the sacrifices, setbacks and determination behind his pursuit of a career in music.
Born Khiry Bivins, Sk8tie grew up on Jacksonville’s Fairytale Lane, where his family home became a neighborhood gathering place. His mother, Dafeney Bivins, known affectionately as “The Candy Lady,” worked at Enterprise Learning Academy and operated a candy and treat business on the side. Her work ethic and generosity left a lasting impression on her son.
His childhood changed dramatically after his mother was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis. Sk8tie helped care for her until her death when he was 15. He later found an outlet for his grief through music.
A promotional CD brought home by his brother after attending Atlanta’s Birthday Bash introduced Sk8tie to Southern hip-hop artists, including T.I. and other emerging Atlanta talent. The experience helped spark his interest in creating music.
Today, Atlanta remains a major influence. Sk8tie cites artists including T.I., Gucci Mane, Young Dro, Travis Porter, Yung L.A. and Rich Kidz among his inspirations, while also drawing from Florida artists and legends such as Frankie Beverly, Tupac Shakur and Michael Jackson.
Now based in Atlanta, Sk8tie hopes to build a successful recording career while eventually expanding into acting. He dreams of signing with a record label, performing at major award shows and collaborating with established artists.
For Sk8tie, Atlanta represents more than a new address. It is a fresh start, a leap of faith and the next chapter in a dream years in the making.
