By Lynn Jones – Jacksonville’s growing reputation as a center for independent film-making was on full display during the annual LOL Festival, where local filmmakers, comedians and entertainment professionals gathered to celebrate a decade of creativity, collaboration and comedy.
Founded by Jacksonville filmmaker Monique Madrid, the festival has spent the past 10 years providing a platform for emerging filmmakers, producers and directors to showcase their work while connecting audiences through independent film and live entertainment.Comedian Jenn Weeks hosted this year’s event, keeping audiences engaged between screenings with comedy and audience interaction. The festival also featured stand-up performances, including an appearance by rap group 95 South, along with interviews and panel discussions led by podcasters, television producers and filmmakers on the state of the entertainment industry.
Independent short films produced by regional filmmakers competed for top honors during the multi-day festival.
Christian Alvarenga and his team earned the festival’s Best Film Award for Showtime. Alexa Wint and her team received second place for Restless, while Derek Ziegler and his team placed third with Neighborhood Security.
Audience members also selected their favorite films. Andrew and Marci, produced by Jay Palmer and his crew, received the Saturday Audience Choice Award winner, while Restless by Alexa Wint and her team captured the Sunday Audience Choice Award.
Organizers said the festival continues to celebrate Jacksonville’s expanding creative community while providing local filmmakers with opportunities to showcase their work and strengthen the city’s presence as an emerging film-making destination.
