Longshoreman and former senator Tony Hill was on the front-line dialoguing with actor and activist Danny Glover at the 54th A. Phillip Randolph Institute (APRI) Annual Education Conference in Chicago, Illinois. This year’s conference theme promoted, “We Were Built for This – Using Our Strength & Power thru Action.” Headlining the conference luncheon was National Action Network (NAN) CEO Al Sharpton. Sharpton ‘discussed the urgent need to protect voting rights, strengthen labor, and keep building the coalitions that Dr. King and A. Philip Randolph envisioned.’ In addition, he put a call out for everyone to join the August 28th March on Wall Street to demand economic justice and real equity.
Speakers also engaged attendees on what they viewed is at stake in the current climate of America. Topics included attack on public education and rising costs for working families to a democracy under threat-and how much we must do together to fight back. “We have to show up, stand out, and make sure the tyrants and dictators don’t think they’ve already won,” said Randi Weingarten who received the Leadership Award. She is the president of the American Federation of Teachers.
APRI was founded by A. Philip Randolph and Bayard Rustin, (APRl’s co-founders) in 1965 to continue the struggle for social, political and economic justice for all working Americans.
