The sorority’s newest honorary members represent trailblazers across music, film, government, and athletics at the 2025 National Convention.
The devastating divas of Delta Sigma Theta took over Washington, D.C., from July 8–13 for their 57th National Convention. More than 20,000 members gathered to celebrate the organization’s legacy of uplifting Black excellence through service, sisterhood, and leadership. Ahead of the convention, during an induction ceremony held on June 10, several heavy-hitters in entertainment, politics, and business became honorary members of the sorority.
Queen Latifah was one of the most recognizable names inducted. A trailblazer since her 1989 debut album All Hail the Queen, she became the first female rapper to earn a gold-certified solo album and has gone on to earn accolades across music, film, and television. She was joined by actress Danielle Brooks, whose career spans acclaimed roles on “Orange Is The New Black” and “The Color Purple,” and longtime political strategist Donna Brazile. Brazile, a New Orleans native, made history leading a major U.S. presidential campaign and has served twice as interim Chair of the Democratic National Committee. She’s also taught at top universities and remains a key voice in political commentary.
The full list of inductees is just as impressive. Fawn Weaver, founder and CEO of Uncle Nearest Premium Whiskey, is preserving the legacy of Nearest Green, the formerly enslaved man who taught Jack Daniel how to distill. Toni Townes-Whitley has led major efforts around digital inclusion and equity during her tenure in tech, including transformative work at Microsoft.
From the world of sports, Jackie Joyner-Kersee — who still holds the heptathlon world record — and Swintayla “Swin” Cash, a three-time WNBA champion, Olympic gold medalist, top executive, and founder of She’s Got Time, also joined the ranks as honorary members.
“This year’s class of honorary members represents a powerhouse group of barrier-breaking women,” said Delta Sigma Theta’s National President Elsie Cooke-Holmes in a statement shared by ESSENCE. “Their collective influence spans boardrooms, stages, and grassroots movements — each one a force in her field and a reflection of Delta’s enduring mission.” The induction was one of many powerful moments during a week filled with panels, service events, and sisterhood celebrations.
Congratulations to the newest honorary members of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated.
