Kwanzaa is an annual celebration of African-American culture held from December 26 to January 1, kicked off its first day (Umoja) of festivities at the Ritz Theatre. Umoja means unity in Swahili and is defined, “To strive for and maintain unity in the family, community, nation and race.”
The seven principles of Kwanzaa are: unity (Umoja), self-determination (Kujichagulia), collective work and responsibility (Ujima), cooperative economics (Ujamaa), purpose (Nia), creativity (Kuumba), and faith (Imani). On display during the celebration were the works of Rhonda Bristol’s artwork, shopping, African vendors and lighting of the kimorah and beating of the drums. Shown is Ryan Sinclair beating the drums for the collective unity for African Americans to stand tall in the midst of adversity for the New Year.
