OneJax Introduces “New and Improved” Community Suppers –Breaking Bread & Barriers—A Civil Discourse Community Suppers Series

Begins October 28, 2024–  (Jacksonville, FL) — OneJax has announced that it will begin a new series of community suppers that will incorporate the discipline of Civil Discourse—Breaking Bread & Barriers. Civil Discourse is a courteous, constructive communication demonstrated by mutual respect, openness and attentive listening. It helps people bridge divides and facilitates informed conversations on public issues.

For more than a decade, OneJax has been hosting Civil Discourse conversations and holding Community Suppers periodically throughout the year to bring people together. Participants come from different parts of town, different cultures and beliefs, and different political perspectives. These programs discuss a variety of topics that impact the people of our city.

The new four-part series is built around the theme, One Nation. OneJax. Using language from the Pledge of Allegiance as a guide, the four sessions will encourage participants to share respectful conversations around specific perspectives implied in the Pledge.

The first session of the series will be held on October 28, 2024 at WJCT Studios (100 Festival Park Ave.) from 6-8PM. “One Nation Under God” will look at our democracy and community through the lens of faith—or no faith at all. Concepts of religious nationalism will be explored. Does faith bring us together or does it push us into separate traditions and practices that fuel division? What does it mean to be a Nation under God?

Topics for the three remaining sessions include:

January 23, 2025: “Indivisible”

April 2025:     “With Liberty and Justice”

June 2025:      “For All”

“Civil Discourse and Community Suppers have been among our most popular programs,” said Elizabeth Andersen, OneJax CEO. “People enjoy getting face to face with others to discuss the issues that touch our daily lives in Jacksonville. It made sense to combine Civil Discourse and Community Suppers in order to deepen the conversation and directly engage participants on the topics. Breaking bread together and having discussions with respect and civility has become more important than ever —both in our national and local dialogue. We want to encourage our community to become active listeners and to show respect and understanding for one another’s positions, even when they’re different from their own. We want to encourage finding common ground on divergent issues. That’s the only way we will move forward and become a great city.”

Tickets are $40 per session. Registration is now open for the October 28 supper. Visit https://onejax.app.neoncrm.com/np/clients/onejax/event.jsp?event=37& to reserve your spot. Questions may be directed to OneJax at onejax@onejax.org or by calling 904-799-5370.
