U.S. Surgeon General Joins “I’m a Star” and Mayor to Empasize Nutrition in Health in Jacksonville

Vice Admiral (VADM) Vivek H. Murthy, the United States Surgeon General traveled to Jacksonville last week to participate in a town hall meeting with area teens and a special announcement regarding the launch of a youth-led national program. While in Jacksonville, Murthy participated in the “Breakfast with Champions, a “Step it Up” town hall meeting and the “Step it Up And Healthy Fun Fair.”

The events took place at various locations throughout the city including Prime Osborn Center, Hemming Park and City Hall. Murthy was in Jacksonville at the request of I’m A Star Foundation CEO Betty Burney and students in the organization’s leadership program. In October, the students met with Surgeon General Murthy to discuss their plan and call to action addressing the nationwide epidemic of childhood obesity. I’m A STAR Foundation is a non-profit organization that empowers youth to become solution-oriented leaders.

The Surgeon General also joined Mayor Curry in the launch of “Journey to One” on World Health Day.
The initiative includes a variety of programs to help residents improve their health through exercise, nutrition and weight loss.
One of the initiatives, called “Mission One Million,” challenges the city of Jacksonville to collectively lose one million pounds. The city also introduced “Mayorthon,” which is an effort to encourage residents to walk or run at least 26.2 miles a month. And the city will begin hosting monthly walks at different parks to promote having an active lifestyle.
