By Hank Roger | The Upsilon Lambda Chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. and the Jacksonville Branch of the NAACP hosted an informative Town Hall meeting at Florida State College at Jacksonville centered on education, attracting nearly 100 attendees eager to hear community updates. The gathering featured presentations from the Jacksonville Job Corps Center, the Early Learning Coalition of Duval, and an update from Superintendent Christopher Bernier. The evening culminated in a panel discussion with distinguished speakers, including State Senator Tracie Davis, State Representative Angie Nixon, School Board Member Darryl Willie, and Mr. Harold Ford, Florida Conference NAACP Education Chairman. The panelists addressed recently passed legislation and its impact on local education. “With all the recent changes, we felt it was the right time to educate the community on what’s happening at the state and national levels regarding education,” stated Dr. Gregory Bostic, president of the Upsilon Lambda Chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc.
President Isaiah Rumlin of the Jacksonville Branch of the NAACP emphasized the need for community involvement, stating, “We must engage in the evolving landscape of education, addressing concerns like the closure of Jacksonville Job Corps and the elimination of free lunch programs. The community must engage and get involved.” This Town Hall served as a vital platform for discussing significant educational issues, encouraging active community participation in shaping the future of local education.
