The New Mt. Zion AME Church invited the community to join in celebrating 159 years of faith, love, and service. Founded in May of 1866, Spirit-filled believers established the original Mt. Zion Episcopal Church on a sand hill in the historic Lone Star community. These faithful pioneers—families from across the Gullah Geechee Cultural Heritage Corridor laid a strong foundation of faith, love, and perseverance. The first services were held in wooden buildings near what is now known as the White Family Cemetery, which dates back to 1862. A new church structure was built in the 1950s and continues to serve as a beacon of hope for generations. The Lone Star community, founded as early as 1866, was home to hardworking families who lived self-sustaining lives—crabbing, fishing, and farming to provide for their loved ones. The area remains rich in African American heritage, connecting to nearby communities such as Fulton, Cosmo, Arlington, and Chaseville.
Today, New Mt. Zion AME Church continues its mission “to love God and honor His Word,” standing as a symbol of unity, strength, and enduring faith. The public warmly attended the anniversary service at New Mt. Zion AME Church and joined in this historic celebration of praise, remembrance, and thanksgiving. Shown are members in front of the pulpit praising their 159 years of church service.
