The new year kicked off with the annual celebration of the Matthew William Gilbert Alumni Association Inc., at the Hyatt Hotel in downtown Jacksonville. This year the last graduating glass of 1970 was celebrated on their 50th anniversary. Over 650 alumni and guests attended to celebrate friendships and present scholarships to deserving students. Scholarships were awarded to ten college bound students in the fall of 2020.
Humanitarian Awards were also given to Jamelle Wilcox-Goodwin- Principal of Matthew William Gilbert Middle School and Dr. Thelma Mumford Glover – Special Education Administrator in Atlanta Ga.
“The Class Roll Call Leader, the late “Coach” Nathaniel Washington was truly missed this year,” said organizer Beverly Clark.
The Duval County School Board also presented recognition to the Gilbert Alumni Association as they recognized the last graduating class of 1970. Notable Matthew Gilbert alumni include Henry Lee Adams Jr., first African-American judge in the middle district of Florida and Bob Hayes, Olympic sprinter, NFL Wide Receiver and the only athlete to win both an Olympic gold medal and a Super Bowl ring.
