The First Coast Black Nurses (FCBNA) recently brought health awareness to the Northside of Jacksonville at the Legends Center, with over 100 attendees. The goal of the symposium was to educate the community, leaving them with a sense of empowerment to take control of their health. Audience participation was encouraged to ensure everyone left with new insights and a greater awareness of their own health.
The symposium featured keynote speakers and a panel that tackled topics ranging from diabetes, maternal health, cardiovascular issues, and more. Community health partners were represented in the vendor section, offering tons of free information and resources for those in attendance. The UF Health mobile van was onsite offering free HIV and STD testing. On-site blood pressure checks were also available upon request, and a vaccine workshop was provided that offered extensive information regarding vaccinations and facts, helping to dispel many myths and rumors about vaccines.
A highlight of the symposium was the Men’s Barbershop Talk. This portion of the symposium was specifically for men, focusing on male sexual and general health in a barbershop style environment. The goal of the barbershop talk was to allow men to freely talk and ask questions with their fellow males without judgment or fear. Every person at the symposium participated in multiple raffles, received free giveaways, and was given a light breakfast and lunch. While this was the first in person symposium held by FCBNA post pandemic, this will certainly not be the last. Follow FCBNA on Instagram and Facebook @FCBNAjax for thier upcoming activities.
