Engage, Inspire, Empower: Local Youth Flooded with Resources for the New Year

Shown is organizer Willie Cook giving words of encouragement and inspiration to youth at the event who also received supplies and food.

As local students prepared to go back to school in Duval and surrounding counties, organizations in very sector presented opportunities to prepare them for success. Youth living on Myrtle Avenue had a second chance to stock up on school supplies, inspiration and prayer at the Families of Slain Children Incorporated (FOSCI). More than 150 backpacks and along with new shoes were given away in addition to help get free uniforms. Organized by FOSCI employee Willie Cook, students in attendance also received words of inspiration and prayers for success.

The first three days have been an experience for not only students but drivers as well with three students in Duval County being struck by cars, with one of the students dying from their injuries. Drivers are urged to pay close attention to marked pedestrian and school zones. Last year, the district reported 42 incidents involving students as pedestrians, bicyclist, or passengers in cars.
