Community Gatekeepers Roundtable to Evaluate Urban Environmental and Sustainable Resources

By B. McNair | St. Johns Riverkeeper and LISC Jacksonville Resilient Ribault 3rd quarter meeting was recently held to update the community on Resilient Ribault northside environmental activities, meeting dates, grant applications, and networking opportunities.

St. Johns Riverkeeper Representative Trey Ford facilitated the roundtable, “We’re glad everyone made it to the meeting.  We have to strengthen the northside and our neighborhoods; as the future is here now,” said Ford. The quarterly meeting was held inside the Bradham Brooks library on Edgewood. Roundtable participants included neighborhood associations, City of Jacksonville Resilient Office, Jax Environmental Partners, Northside Coalition of Jacksonville (NSCOJ), New Success Town, The Nonprofit Center, Audubon Society and more! The coalitions are empowering community organizations based along the Ribault River to transform parks, their neighborhoods into safe accessible and sustainable public spaces.

Each entity delved into their organizational goals and next steps. Highlighting their northside achievements, Grand Park association representative Latrina Dowdell spoke to the panel concerning the associations 53 community gardens throughout the Grand Park corridor adding that the gardens socially connect the residents. They also assist with reducing social isolation and help with fresh fruits and vegetables helping to reduce diabetes and cultural farming lessons from resident Vietnamese and Dominican farmers in the neighborhood. “These meetings help reinforce what we do in our communities,” said Dowdell.
