Soil Collection Ceremony

September 14 @ 4:00 pm - 7:00 pm

On Sunday, September 14 at 4:00 PM, we will come together as a community to honor the lives of Joe and Ada Lang through a powerful Soil Collection Ceremony.

A Soil Collection Ceremony is a sacred act of remembrance. Community members gather soil from the site where a racial terror lynching occurred, preserving it in jars as a way to acknowledge the truth of our shared history, honor the lives lost, and create space for collective healing. These jars become part of the Equal Justice Initiative’s national memorial, ensuring that these stories are never forgotten.

This Sunday, we will gather soil to remember the lives of Joe and Ada Lang, preserve their history, and take a step toward building a more equitable Jacksonville.
