About: ASALH was founded in 1915 by Dr. Carter G. Woodson. He is the father of African American History. It is the Leading African American History organization in the world. ASALH was born out of the lack of information on the accomplishments of African Americans and from Dr. Woodson’s desire to honor those men and women who suffered greatly in the pursuit of social justice. Each year ASALH selects the theme for which we celebrate. This year’s national theme is “African Americans and the VOTE.” The James Weldon Johnson Branch of ASALH was founded in 1995.
