Duval County Public Schools invited the community to a special afternoon celebration as they officially dedicated the “Bullet” Bob Hayes Track & Field at Matthew Gilbert Middle School. The ceremony honored the enduring legacy of “Bullet” Bob Hayes, who graduated from the school in 1960 and cemented his place in history as the only athlete to earn both an Olympic gold medal and a Super Bowl ring.
Following the ribbon-cutting ceremony, guests gathered for a short formal program that included remarks from family members, community partners, volunteers, coaches, and members of the Bob Hayes Invitational Track Meet Committee. Speakers reflected on Hayes’ remarkable journey, the pride he brought to his hometown, and the inspiration he continues to provide to young athletes across Jacksonville.
The dedication served not only as a tribute to Hayes’ historic accomplishments, but also as a celebration of the community’s ongoing commitment to honoring one of its most iconic local legends.
