Newly discovered evidence reveals potential prosecutorial misconduct by former Brunswick District Attorney Jackie Johnson’s office
ATLANTA, GA — A coalition of Atlanta attorneys investigating the wrongful conviction of Pastor Kenneth Adkins has uncovered what they describe as a major Brady violation involving the suppression of critical evidence—specifically, Bishop’s letter of resignation—by the office of former Brunswick District Attorney Jackie Johnson.
The attorneys emphasize that while defense counsel Kevin Gough had a duty to conduct a thorough investigation, he was also legally entitled to rely on the prosecution’s representation that all Brady materials—evidence favorable to the defense—had been disclosed.
Citing the U.S. Supreme Court’s precedent in Strickler v. Greene, the legal team noted:
“When a prosecutor asserts that they have complied with Brady obligations through an open-file policy, the defense may reasonably rely on that representation to include all materials the state is constitutionally required to disclose.”
The coalition of attorneys further stated:
“Brady violations can occur by mistake, but they can also result from overzealous and unethical prosecution. In this case, the conduct of former DA Jackie Johnson’s office shows a clear disregard for justice and due process. The evidence now emerging paints a deeply troubling picture of a conviction secured at all costs, not through fairness or transparency.”
The advocates are now urging state and federal authorities to reopen Adkins’ case and conduct a full review of the prosecution’s handling of evidence, citing serious violations of Adkins’ constitutional rights.
“This case is not just about one man—it’s about restoring faith in a justice system that must protect every citizen from prosecutorial abuse,” the attorneys said. “The newly discovered evidence demands accountability and immediate corrective action.”
The group has pledged to continue pressing for justice and transparency until Kenneth Adkins’ wrongful conviction is overturned.
