NAACP Youth Demand Answers and Accountability for Rising Utility Costs

The recent town hall meeting on how residents can better deal with the high costs of utility bills took on a new audience with participation from the NAACP Environmental and Climate Justice Committee’s Roots to Actions Youth Leadership program. The public meeting shared information highlighting concerns about pollution, public health, and JEA’s reversal of its earlier commitment to retire its coal plant.

The youth voices wanted to hear how they could contribute to keep costs down. Held at Mt. Sinai Missionary Baptist Church panelists included a lineup of respected community voices from pastors to solar energy representatives. The teens spoke candidly about watching their families struggle with high electric bills and shared their fears about what Jacksonville’s environment will look like when they reach adulthood. Their testimony drew strong applause and underscored the intergenerational stakes of the issue.
