By Lynn Jones – Spartanburg, South Carolina’s Sweet Baby Kita doesn’t just tell jokes — she lives comedy. From the moment she picks up the phone, her laughter is contagious, her punchlines slip in effortlessly, and within minutes you’re doubled over, forgetting it’s even an interview.
Fresh off the stage at rapper and actor T.I.’s Trap City Café in Atlanta, SBK (as she’s affectionately called) was still buzzing with energy. “Comedy is my ministry,” she said. “It’s what I was born to do.”
From Lunch Break Jokes to National Stages
SBK’s path to comedy didn’t begin in clubs or theaters. It started at work. During lunch breaks, her coworkers would pay her to tell jokes, just to brighten up their afternoons. That spark of storytelling eventually led her to stages across the country, from Comedy Zone clubs to California’s Punchline.
But her real breakthrough moment came when she auditioned for Kevin Hart’s comedy tour. Her friend, comedian Rodney Perry, watched her set and smiled knowingly. “Well, guess it’s a wrap,” he told her. Sure enough, soon after, SBK got the call: she was in. Perry later admitted he had to keep the secret until it was official.
Owning the Stage — Even Past the Light
Ask anyone who’s seen SBK live, and they’ll tell you: she doesn’t just perform, she connects. During a show with Carlos Miller, the audience was laughing so hard she powered right past her red light — the signal to wrap it up. By the time she finally left the stage, a stagehand scolded her for going over time… then immediately broke into a grin. “You were good though,” he admitted.
That moment sums up SBK perfectly: rules may bend, but the laughter never stops.
A Love Letter to Duval
As she prepares to bring her LOL Comedy Show experience to Jacksonville, SBK can’t hide her affection for the city. “I love Duval,” she said with a laugh. “The South is me — love them gold teeth, garlic wings, and the culture.”
Comedy as Healing
For SBK, comedy isn’t just entertainment — it’s healing. She recalled a show where a family had come straight from a funeral. By the end of her set, they were laughing so hard, the weight of grief seemed to lift, if only for a while. Afterward, they told her, “There is life after death.”
“That right there is why I do this,” she said softly. “Making people laugh through their pain… that’s my gift.”
The Journey Ahead
Guided by advice from comedy legend Steve Harvey and sharpened through TV appearances and years of stage time, Sweet Baby Kita knows there’s plenty of space for everyone in the comedy game. “There’s room for all of us in this business,” she said. “My life’s work is about joy, healing, and connection.”
And as Duval gears up for her arrival, one thing’s certain: Sweet Baby Kita is bringing more than just jokes. She’s bringing a ministry of laughter.
