Property Appraisal Office Amendment 5, the Homestead Exemption Adjustment

Duval County Property Appraiser Joyce Morgan  shared her perspective on the voter approval of Amendment 5, the Homestead Exemption Adjustment, which received support from 67% of Florida voters. Amendment 5 is set to take effect on January 1, 2025, and you will not have to do anything as this will be automatically applied on homesteaded property.

The amendment’s adjustment applies to the homestead exemption for non-school taxes based on the Consumer Price Index and only when the percent change is positive, allowing qualifying homeowners to benefit from additional tax relief.  Morgan added that she and other property appraisers across the state will work closely with the Department of Revenue and with Computer-Assisted Mass Appraisal (CAMA) partners to ensure their systems are equipped to handle this change efficiently.

“This new adjustment will impact each property differently depending on its assessed value,” Morgan explained. “Our goal is to make this transition as seamless as possible for property owners across Duval County.”

As January 1, 2025, approaches, the Duval County Property Appraiser’s Office remains committed to keeping homeowners informed and prepared for the adjustment, providing a smooth, accurate application of the adjustment.
