Eastsiders Pedal Through Community for a Purpose

By Lynn Jones – The Eastside Brotherhood social club annual ‘peddling for a purpose’ event was held at their hall on A. Philip Randolph in the heart of the eastside community.  More than fifty bike riders from across Duval County met up and rode their bikes for the purpose of building neighborhood camaraderie, support and community activism.

Since 1981, the brotherhood has joined together to create lifelong bonds and make a difference in the Eastside community. Peddling their way around the neighborhood, each biker had a personal riding purpose to connect families through exercise to improve cardiovascular fitness, strength and flexibility. In addition, bikers rode through the neighborhood to view and support the eastside rehab and urban renewal efforts.  Participants stayed hydrated with free drinks, food and refreshment.

‘Peddling for a Purpose,’ is a quarterly event that’s aids the eastside with a vision for neighborhood interaction and to recreate a vibrant sound and safe environment for the businesses and homeowners in the area.

“One thing I can say is that riding a bike is a whole other vibe. My legs and calves got a good workout. Plus the eastside neighborhood holds many memories for me and my family,” said Brotherhood member Thaddeus Powell.
