The 48 Hour Film Project is an exciting creative weekend for Filmmakers making short films. Held inside WJCT Studios, this year, Team Caas, a group of talented individuals in film, took on their very first 48 Hour Film Project challenge. The team made an impressive start winning, “Best Use Of Prop”, “3rd place in Audience Choice (Group B)”, and became nominated for “Best Film” for their 48 Hour Film Project, “By The Way (What’s Your Name). Led by producer Carlos Smith, team Caas consists of veteran and up and coming filmmakers. Smith began his filmmaking journey in 2006 at just 18 years old. Starting with experimental projects featuring his high school friends, he soon expanded into event coverage, skits, music videos, and short films. In 2013, Smith released his first feature, ‘Homeboys,’ which premiered to a sold-out audience at SunRay Cinema on his 25th birthday.
The competition takes place on different weekends in 100 different cities throughout the year. In each city local Film Teams from beginners to pro’s–compete to make a short film in only a weekend.
It all begins when teams draw genres out of a hat and receive the required elements for your film. Then it is off to the races writing, shooting and editing and doing whatever it takes to submit your short film on Sunday night. The big payoff is seeing your masterpiece on the big screen at a local theater.
“There is nothing better than seeing your film with an audience and seeing firsthand how they react to your movie,” said organizer Adam Madrid. At the city awards event, the winning films are determined by local judges. More than a dozen awards are given from Best Acting to Best Directing to the top prize: Best Film. The top films earn more exposure. Many of the 48 films go on to festivals around the world, garnering a 17 year partnership with the Cannes Film Festival Short Film Corner.
The 48 Hour film festival started in Washington DC in 2001 and has produced more than 70,000+ films for the 48HFP worldwide.
