By WI Web Staff (Source www.washingtoninformer.com) – About 1 in 5 of all Americans say a relative or close friend has died from the coronavirus, a new poll from The Associated Press-NORC Center for Public Affairs Research found.
Communities of color were the hardest-hit by the pandemic, with 30% of Blacks and 29% of Latinos knowing of a relative or close friend who died from the virus as opposed to only 15% of whites, the poll found.
But as the number of cases drops nationwide, so does the fear. Nearly 3 in 10 Americans are very worried about themselves or a family member contracting the coronavirus, down from about 4 in 10 in recent months, AP reported.
Nevertheless, concern about the pandemic remains, particularly among Black and brown communities. Roughly 43% of Blacks and 39% of Latinos are very or extremely worried about themselves or a loved one getting the virus, compared to only 25% of whites.
As of Thursday, the U.S. has reported about 29.2 million coronavirus cases and nearly 530,000 virus-related deaths since the pandemic’s outset early last year, both tops globally, according to a Johns Hopkins University tracker.
