State Senator Arthenia Joyner Call for Removal of Radio Ad Invoking Slavery
TAMPA – State Senator Arthenia Joyner (D-Tampa) on Thursday called for the sponsors of a political attack ad invoking images of slavery to immediately pull the inflammatory spot.
“My whole life has been about the fight for equality and human rights,” said Senator Joyner. “From a young child who witnessed first-hand the rides of the KKK through my Florida town to my arrests as a young woman for participating in civil rights demonstrations, this struggle has remained at the core of my being. As a black woman, to hear images of ‘slavery’ invoked to deride a candidate resurrects an extremely painful period in this county that I fought long and hard to change.
“While negative campaign ads might be the new normal in our elections process, this ‘slavery’ ad sinks to a new low; it’s meant solely to capitalize on the horrendous past of one people, and exploit that fear for political purposes. The sponsors should be ashamed and immediately remove it from the airwaves.”
