Last weekend, the newly developed non-profit organization Shooting Hoops Not Guns held their 1st annual Motivational /Life Skill speaker series. The free forum was held at the Westconnect Library. Over 50 participants listened to speakers discussing staying focused, having passion and going with your “gut” feeling.

The innovative non-profit was developed to educate, elevate and influence Jacksonville’s Westside male residents, 18-25. The goal is to teach and encourage young males through sport activities, life enrichment, money management, motivational, educational and career enhancement, events and seminars. The secondary goal is to spread awareness of gun violence in the community and teach prevention through positive alternatives. Founder and organizer,

Founder Valencia Hawkins remarked, “My 21-year old godson’s best friend, who was like a nephew died from gunshot fatality.  Youth are killing each other with guns and our goal is to put as many role models in front of them as we can.”
