The 5000 Role Models of Excellence Project Duval Chapter hosted its 3rd Annual Student Symposium and Luncheon at Florida State College Downtown Campus.
The event focused on the importance of starting early on developing a post-secondary education also known as the organizations’s “Success Plan.” The event takes into consideration that not all students want to attend a 4-year university, and that there are still multiple paths to becoming a successful and productive adult.
Career presentations and professionals on hand those representing nursing, air traffic control, firemen, merchant seaman, funeral services, transportation, information technology, automotive technology, U.S. Coast Guard and more. Students were also able to speak with representatives from colleges about admission requirements and program offerings. In addition, several companies were present to share with student’s information about career opportunities and options. The students also enjoyed lunch and inspiration speakers.
The 5000 Role Models of Excellence Project was founded in 1993 by Congresswoman Frederica S. Wilson in Miami-Dade County. During the 2015-2016 school years, the 5000 Role Models of Excellence Project was initiated in Duval County Public Schools. Currently the program serves six middle school and six local high schools throughout Duval County. During the 2018-2019 school years the program plans to add one additional middle and high school for a total of 14 sites. The program is currently led by Mr. Lawrence Hills, who is the District Supervisor for the program.
The program defines its mission is to “intervene in the lives of at risk minority male youth in an effort to provide them with positive role models and experiences that will empower them to make good choices and encourages healthy living, responsibility, respect and achievement.
The program, an in-school dropout prevention mentoring program for boys ages 9 – 19, has awarded millions of dollars in scholarships since it was founded.
