By WI Web Staff – The number of reported global coronavirus cases hit 40 million Monday, as infections trend upward in Europe and the U.S.
As of Monday afternoon, 40,246,655 coronavirus cases and 1,115,985 related deaths have been reported worldwide, according to a Johns Hopkins University tracker. The U.S. leads the world in both categories with roughly 8.2 million cases and 220,000 deaths.
European governments are trying to control a surge of COVID-19 cases by reintroducing some strict measures in the public realm and hospitality sector including the closing or limiting the opening of pubs, bars and restaurants, restricting social gatherings and implementing curfews like those in place in some French cities such as Paris, CNBC reported.
When adjusted for population, the number of new COVID-19 infections in Europe has exceeded the U.S., with the continent reporting 187 new coronavirus cases per million people, based on the seven-day average, compared to the U.S. rate of 162, CNBC reported.
