The 7th Annual Urban Education Symposium: Reclaiming Young Black Males for Jacksonville’s Future was held over the weekend in downtown Jax at the Main Library.
Students, teachers and parents and guardians were featured and shared perspectives on the 2015 theme: “Who is teaching and leading our students in the classroom?”. The symposium was held from 8:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. and began with the show entitled “Success Realized” where students were a part of a studio audience to discuss and expose students to a variety of careers and careers paths.
The “Lets Play the Feud – Success Style” workshop engaged students in an interactive game of “Family Feud” with questions garnered around success and personal relationship. The final two workshops, “Success through my Eyes”, challenged male students to think about how they see success in themselves and “Success is our Commitment” where students chose the top five traits that make a successful student.
Actor David Girard served as the moderator of the event attended by hundreds of community trustees and youth which was opened byMayor Alvin Brown who stresses the symposium’s importance to the city and Jacksonville’s future.
