Deltas Encourage Youth to Prioritize Health & Fitness

The Jacksonville Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., recently facilitated a health and wellness program for youth participants in their Delta Academy and Delta GEMS Institute initiatives. The purpose of the program was to introduce young ladies to healthy living practices, encourage them to incorporate regular exercise and physical activity into their lives and educate them on the preparation and importance of balanced, nutritious meals.

On Saturday, April 9th, in conjunction with guest speakers Dr. Marlo Rivers, Max “Dr. Fitness” Sturdivant and Chef Holly Muhammad, Deltas provided critical facts/statistics, helpful resources and interactive learning experiences designed to increase participants’ abilities to make informed health-related decisions that will ultimately enhance the quality of their lives.

The threefold program began with an educational component led by Dr. Rivers on the health benefits of regular exercise, which was followed by exercise sessions and a series of specific workout activities to target various parts of the body and increase energy and stamina. After working up a sweat, the young ladies received wellness tips from “Dr. Fitness” and participated in small group discussions and partner exercises to highlight the benefits of creating wellness support systems. The youth also enjoyed an interactive presentation by Chef Holly who prepared healthy meals with fresh fruits, vegetables and low-calorie/carb ingredients, then passed around samples for them to taste.

Inspired by First Lady Michelle Obama’s “Let’s Move!” initiative, the fun-filled activities motivated the young ladies to take charge of their health and increase their odds of combating or avoiding common risk factors that often plague our community. The event aimed to ensure that youth are poised to implement wellness plans into their lives and encourage their families and friends to do the same.
