William Marion Raines Senior High School, the historically black high school located at the corner of Raines Avenue on the Northside has a rich legacy that alumna still celebrate today. The school was named in honor of William Marion Raines, a prominent black educator and Duval County principal. Celebrating their 45th reunion last week was the class of 1974 with a weekend of festivities including a meet and greet, cookout, and Sunday service held at classmate Pastor Reginald Chever’s Deliverance Church of Our Lord Jesus. During the weekend of events, classmates mingled and reminisced on highs school rivalries, sweethearts, families and grandchildren wearing their class shirts. “We are proud of Raines for their African American legacy and that we will always be a part of history. It may be 45 years since graduation, but we feel and look 25,” smiled classmate Anthony Barlow.
