Beautillion Prepares Young Men for a Life of Black Excellence

The notion that “It takes a village to raise a child” is certainly not a new concept. As far back as 1938, an organization was formed in Philadelphia to help be the village that African American children need to ensure a successful transition into adulthood. To assist in that transition, the local chapter of Jack & Jill of American presented their 16th Biennial Les Beautillion Militaire on Saturday at the Hyatt Downtown.

The Beautillion includes a series of leadership-oriented workshops, culminating in a black tie dinner and dance during where the future leaders are presented to the Jacksonville Community. The 10 Beaux’s experienced numerous workshops, including: “Building your Brand,” “Black and Blue: Tips on Handling a Police Stop,” and “Sex Drugs and Hip Hop.” The theme for this year’s event was “Journey Into Manhood”.  Over the past year,  community professionals have invested their time and expertise through the workshops, hosting image seminars and conducting career assessment and development sessions with each participants. Professional dress-for-success workshops, ballroom dancing and etiquette sessions are also a pert of the training provided to the polished young men. The goal of the exposure is to inspire the young men to focus on college as a means to realizing his own dreams and plant the seed of service to their communities through leadership and community engagement,.

As their community service project, the young men served healthy meals and educated the community about developing a healthy life style. This experienced exposed the youth to Jacksonville’s diverse community including individuals negatively impacted by the government shutdown.

Proceeds from the Beautillion will support the Jack and Jill Foundation and both the Shannon McCants and LEAD scholarships. Shown are the Beaux’s and the Belles.
